What to Have Ready When the HVAC Tech Arrives

The first twenty minutes get lost to a dog, a locked gate, and a furnace behind storage bins. That time comes off the diagnosis, and you still pay for the hour.

A path

Clear a walk to the furnace or air handler, and out to the outdoor unit. If the filter is in the ceiling, know which grille. The disconnect at the outdoor unit should not be behind a fence you forgot the code for. Write the gate code on the work order when you book, not when the truck is in the driveway.

One sentence

No heat since 6. Thermostat says heat, the room is 66, the furnace clicks and stops. That is more useful than the history of the house. Add the age if you know it, and the last part that was replaced. If it iced over or would not start, say what you already tried so they do not repeat the battery check.

Before they leave

The part name, the repair price, and the readings if the visit was supposed to be a tune-up. A price for a new system with no part name is a second conversation. You can have it. It should not replace the first one.
