A dirty coil, a bad capacitor, low refrigerant, and a thermostat that was never set up can all feel the same from the couch. Have the owner look at it before you accept a full-system price from the driveway.
A chain can often replace a system the same week. A small shop is the better call when you want the person who wrote the bid to be the person in the basement, and when a repair is still an option. Ask who owns the company and whether they will price a repair next to a replacement.
Change the filter, clear the condensate line, and pull leaves off the outdoor unit before the first hot week. If it still short-cycles, call a local contractor.
